HALLOWEEN: Peanuts, 1992

1992, and I still think it's pretty clear that Charles M. Schulz got really sick of having to mention the Great Pumpkin every year sometime back in the early seventies.

HALLOWEEN: The Firebird

For my third piece of Halloween art music, I like Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird, specifically the 1919 suite version of his 1910 ballet (originally composed for the Ballets Russes). The version I wanted to highlight, the complete version conducted by Leonard Bernstein, is on YouTube but in pieces (I recommend listening to them, starting here), so here is the excerpt version that was used in Fantasia 2000. It's cut down, but it's an excellent, emotional performance, with James Levine conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It probably doesn't seem very Halloween-ish, but that first appearance of the "infernal dance" section always scares the hell out of me. In this one, I think hope soars out of evil's hands, but the struggle in the middle just sounds like evil trying to exert its will, and that kind of scare goes good with the season.

Muppet Monday

One of the great Muppet classic sketches--and from one of the best Muppet Show episodes (119, starring Vincent Price)--in which Behemoth (performed by Richard Hunt) devours Shakey Sanchez (performed by Jim Henson) while he sings "I've Got You Under My Skin."

Skeleton Frog!

I've picked up a few new Halloween decorations this season for the Mood Table, but this is my favorite, for sure. A skeleton frog for SamuraiFrog. Got this one at Target.

Song of the Week: "Sunset Grill"

Man, my wife hates this song. I get it in my head sometimes. One of those weird, synth-heavy songs from the 80s that I like and that... kind of reminds me of something... but I can't remember what. I don't know. Weird.
