Hard to disagree: "[W]hen it comes to classics like The Muppets, the right course is to protect what’s best about the gifts left us by creators universally described as gentle, kind and sweet — not to taint them by plundering their charm."

That review is pretty hysterical, and shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the Muppets, their history, what kind of stories they're capable of telling, what Jim Henson's intentions as a storyteller were, or how satire works. The Muppets were never meant to be uncomplicated and only for kids. It would be more accurate to say it's hard to find a single instance where she's right.

Thanks for replying; I haven't seen any episodes but, given the article was from the NY Post, I took its views with a pinch of salt. But it wasn't the only such review (as your latest post points out). The article did at least provide a link to five examples of the Muppets' more memorable moments, including the one where they deal with Henson's death.

I did see other reviews that were mixed, but most of what I saw (particularly from the fans) felt the show had a lot of potential and just isn't there yet, but seems to be moving somewhere near there. If you look at any sitcom in that same format, though, it usually takes some tweaks to really nail it. (The first seasons of The Office and Parks & Rec are pretty bad, but they're also only five or six episodes long.) And for what it's worth the Henson family seems really enthusiastic about it.
