Film Week

A review of the films I've seen this past week.

HANNA (2011)
Meh. It's just... meh. Who cares? A genetically-engineered super soldier who is a 17 year-old girl (Saoirse Ronan) leaves the mountain wilderness she shares with her ex-secret agent father (Eric Bana) to find the truth of her existence. Unfortunately, she exists in an overwrought action flick with rampant symbolism and nothing much to say. There are two movies here. One in which a teenage girl is chased down by her government programmers and she has to fight to survive, and one in which a teenage girl who has always lived apart from society enters civilization and can't find a way to be normal. They don't co-exist well, and apart from the first 15 minutes, which are beautifully edited and photographed, there's nothing here to recommend it. It's pointless, and pointlessly affected. The worst affectation is Tom Hollander, a truly shitty actor, hamming it up at the same time he sleepwalks his way through the movie as a stereotypically gay super assassin who never has to prove why everyone's so afraid of him. Lots of build up for nothing, but Saoirse is really pretty, even though she's never been in a good movie yet... ** stars.

You know, I saw this with a friend of mine who thought it was awesome, but I came away feeling the same way as you. Like you, I was really perplexed as to why everyone seemed so afraid of Lt. Jim Dangle, when he was just a guy with a gun.

It did, however, prompt a conversation about why it's completely unnecessary to create genetically superior "super soldiers" nowadays. There is no Soviet dick measuring contest anymore, and at age 17, that means that the program created Hanna three years after the competitors collapsed.

Really, what the fuck do you need a genetically enhanced super soldier for when you're fighting poor people with soviet-era tech in the middle of the desert?

That's a really good point, too. I didn't even think about that; maybe I'm still just taking it for granted as a cliche!

Hey, you know I just noticed that there was no longer any porn in my tumblr dashboard. What happened to your tumblr account?

Your comments echo what I've heard about the film. So I guess I'll pass.

As far as the super-soldier idea.
1) Prosthetic body armor & machines will be along soon, well before we can grow a super-soldier.
2) If we did grow a SS, by the time it reaches maturity, it'll be ready for the last war.
3) Any idiot with a rifle can kill a SS. What a waste of time, money, & effort.

Off-topic: what DID happen to your tumblr?

My tumblr account was suspended in an act of petty revenge. That's what I'm calling it.

I started over again at

Hey, thanks! Will go check it out. I still don't have a tumblr account, but it's on The List, as soon as I find a good watermarking widget for pictures.
