Film Week

A review of the films I've seen this past week.

INNOCENCE (2004)
An odd, pastoral, impressionistic, beautiful-looking French film about... well, I'm not sure. It's about girls between the ages of 7 and 12 who are inside a mysterious boarding school they're not allowed to leave. They train in ballet, mostly, and perform before an almost unrecognizable audience. It's an allegory for the journey through puberty, but done in a very lyrical way without being heavy-handed or obvious (or obtuse and maddening). It reminded me a lot of Picnic at Hanging Rock, though less purposely obscure. ***1/2 stars.
