Film Week

A review of the films I've seen this past week.

Funny first half-hour, then it just goes on too long and becomes tedious. And then, in the end credits, it suddenly pretends the whole film was a statement about the financial crisis. Some really judicious editing could've saved it, but as it is, it's pretty disappointing. ** stars.

Pretty too look at, but silly and predictable (and not in a fun way). I know it's trendy to slam Christina Aguilera for trying to act, but she's not any worse than, say, Jessica Alba--bad, but not truly wretched. Hell, she's a better actress than Megan Fox. The real problem is with a completely tension-free script that's as trite as it is cliched. The musical scenes are very nicely staged and performed (what Christina doesn't have as an actress she has in spades as a singer and in just being a foxy bitch). Kristen Bell is in it for a second, and it's nice to see her play something different. But, you know, it's pretty meh. **1/2 stars.
