California Overturns Prop 8

The ruling: "Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite sex couples are superior to same-sex couples. Because California has no interest in discriminating against gay men and lesbians, and because Proposition 8 prevents California from fulfilling its constitutional obligation to provide marriages on an equal basis, the court concludes that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional."

Of course, this will surely be appealed by the bigots, who have already filed a motion to halt implementation of the ruling. After all, the bigoted, the hateful, and the churches that fund and support them--the child-marrying Mormon fundamentalists and the child molester protecting Catholic hierarchy--really believe gay people getting married may be harmful to children.

I say just let the haters spout off. Each time they lose their shit over things like this they only further marginalize their positions and show themselves for the backwards hillbillies that they are. We have the law and the shift in history on our side. Let the losers flap around and hide under their couches.

Of course it'll be appealed by the bigots; that's what they do.

However, this is a moment of celebration. So I hope you'll join in the celebration, as we inch ever closer to gay marriage being finally recognized in this country.

Also, suck it, bigots.

An acquaintance of mine (even if he had been a friend, he wouldn't be any more) not only voted for Prop 8, but he campaigned for it and donated a chunk of change to it. I feel better about him in the wake of this decision. Instead of being a fucking asshole who helped take away my right to get married, he's just a plain old fucking asshole now.

To (strain to) be fair, the other side would have appealed the decision too.
Not that the decision surprises me, if only because the Prop 8 side had incompetents for lawyers, while the good side (there's my bias) had both lawyers from Bush v. Gore.
This is heading to the SCOTUS and I have no idea what they'll decide
