Song of the Week: "5D (Fifth Dimension)"

My favorite track by the Byrds, the title and lead-in for their third album, Fifth Dimension. It is very much a Roger McGuinn song. It's not the modal show stopping masterpiece "Eight Miles High" is, but it's just so pretty and uncertain that I love it. 1966 is such an interesting year in music, with bands like the Byrds, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and the Zombies branching off in search of new directions in rock music. This is the kind of music I never, ever get tired of.

A lot of music artists have multiple box sets but the only group I've bought both box sets from is the Byrds and it was more than worth it. Such a unique and eclectic history.

1966 is probably my favorite year in all of pop music. I get these 1960s compilations and the best stuff is there. Supremes, Beatles' Revolver plus the two before. I know a couple guys who were born in '66 who embrace that music as well, in a way I could never embrace 1953 music.

I've long loved the Byrds, but have gotten to know a bunch of new ones thanks to Little Steven's Underground Garage. "What's Happening?!," "Lady Friend" and "Rennaissance Faire" are among the new ones.

I was fortunate to see McGuinn, Clark and Hillman (basically the Byrds without David Crosby) in the summer of 1979 at Ravinia. David Bromberg opened for them, and as Bromberg finished, a guy walked up to my three friends and I and handed us pavillion tickets; he only wanted to see Bromberg. The seats were up close to the stage. They performed a lot of old Byrds songs, including one of my faves, "Chestnut Mare." Roger McGuinn came out for the encore on roller skates!

Booksteve: Nice. I have the remasters of the albums themselves, up through Untitled. I've never gotten tired of any of them.

Roger: The late sixties are just mind-blowing. I was born in 1976, so the bar was a little lower.

Red: Great stuff.

Johnny: I think "What's Happening?!" was the B-side to "5D." Seeing them in concert would have been fantastic; I have their live album, Untitled, and it's brilliant. The live version of "Eight Miles High" is quite a jam.
